How to Source Wholesale and Clearance Stock for Resale

How to Source Wholesale and Clearance Stock for Resale

Wholesale and clearance stock can make sourcing more consistent, but large quantities increase risk. Verify the supplier, the goods and the likely demand before committing cash.

Define your buying criteria

Set acceptable categories, condition, unit cost, minimum margin and maximum quantity. Decide whether you can handle customer returns, untested goods or incomplete packaging.

Check the supplier

Look for clear business details, written terms and credible contact information. Ask for an invoice and understand who owns the goods. Be cautious with sellers who pressure you to pay quickly or avoid normal documentation.

Understand stock descriptions

Customer returns, shelf pulls, overstock and refurbished goods are not the same. Ask whether items are tested, graded or sold as seen. Obtain a manifest when available, but remember that accuracy can vary.

Verify authenticity and compliance

Do not buy branded stock without reasonable evidence of authenticity. Check product-safety, labelling and restricted-item requirements. Electrical, cosmetic, toy and food-related categories can carry additional obligations.

Test demand

Research completed sales, competition and price trends. Buy a sample or small lot before a pallet. A low unit cost does not help if the products are slow, seasonal or expensive to ship.

Calculate landed cost

Include delivery, VAT where applicable, marketplace fees, packaging, testing, storage, breakage and expected unsellable units. Divide the true total cost by the number of saleable items.

Plan storage and cash flow

Large lots tie up money and space. Estimate how long the stock may take to sell and keep funds available for operating costs and returns.

Record results

Track sell-through, average selling price, defects and profit by supplier and batch. Use the evidence to guide repeat orders.

Reliable sourcing is a process of verification and testing. The best supplier relationship is built on accurate paperwork, consistent grading and stock that performs after every cost is counted.
