How to Price Items for Resale and Protect Your Profit

How to Price Items for Resale and Protect Your Profit

The right resale price needs to attract buyers while covering every cost. Guessing from active listings often leads to slow stock or disappointing profit.

Start with sold prices

Check recent completed sales for the same model, size and condition. Use several examples rather than one unusually high result. If an item is rare, compare close alternatives and explain the features that justify a difference.

Calculate total cost

Your cost is more than the purchase price. Include marketplace fees, payment charges, promoted listing costs, packaging, postage, cleaning, repairs and an allowance for returns. If you are VAT registered, use figures that match your accounting treatment.

Set a profit target

Choose either a minimum cash profit or a margin target. A £5 profit may be acceptable on stock that sells quickly and takes little work, while bulky or risky products may need a much larger return.

Adjust for condition

New, complete items generally command more than used or incomplete versions. Test electronics where possible and photograph flaws. Honest condition grading supports the price and lowers the chance of a dispute.

Consider demand and seasonality

Garden products may rise in spring, while toys and gifts can strengthen before Christmas. Fashion trends can move quickly. Balance the chance of a higher future price against the cost of holding inventory.

Use a pricing range

Set a target price, a sensible offer level and a firm minimum. This makes negotiation easier and prevents emotional decisions when an offer arrives.

Review unsold stock

If an item receives views but no interest, improve the title, photographs or description before cutting the price. If similar items are selling for less, reduce the price or bundle slow stock.

Good pricing is a repeatable calculation, not a hunch. Keep records so you can compare expected profit with the amount you actually earned.
