How to Check Branded Items Before Reselling Them
Branded products can attract strong demand, but counterfeit and misidentified goods create legal, financial and account risks. Use a category-specific checking process.
Research the exact model
Compare product codes, release dates, materials, colourways and original specifications. Small differences may indicate another version rather than a fake, so avoid conclusions based on one feature.
Inspect construction
Check stitching, printing, hardware, labels, packaging and finishing against reliable references. Electronics should have consistent model and regulatory information.
Consider the source
Keep invoices, receipts and supplier details. Provenance is especially important for higher-value items. Be cautious when a price or story seems inconsistent with the product.
Use specialist authentication
For categories with high counterfeit risk, consider a reputable authentication service. Understand what evidence the service provides and whether the marketplace accepts it.
Do not rely on packaging alone
Boxes, dust bags, certificates and receipts can also be copied or paired with the wrong product. Assess the item itself and whether all details agree.
Check condition separately
Authenticity does not determine condition. Record repairs, replaced parts, wear and missing accessories. Photograph identifiers without exposing sensitive ownership data.
Follow marketplace rules
Some platforms require approval, invoices or specific photographs. Never use a brand name for an item you cannot reasonably verify.
Walk away when uncertain
Potential profit does not justify listing a product with unresolved authenticity concerns. Return it through the appropriate process or seek professional advice.
A repeatable checklist protects buyers and your business. Build deep knowledge in a few brands or categories instead of assuming every branded bargain is safe to sell.
